Sign attached to the frame of the flag reads, "This Confederate
flag was made by the young women of the Clinton Female Institute
... This flag was presented to Colonel Franklin J. Faison of the
20th Infantry Regiment. Colonel Faison was born in 1824 in Elliott,
North Carolina (located in eastern Sampson County). On June 27,
1862, Colonel Faison fell on the bloody fields at Cold Harbor, Virginia,
while manning a captured artillery piece when it exploded. His body
was returned to Sampson County with this flag drapped over his coffin." |
